9) Frequently Asked Questions about Technical Training:

Each month Jeff Love will answer one of the frequently asked questions we receive about computer and technical training and career development. They will be archived on a separate FAQ page on our website after several months.

August 2001 FAQ:

How do the *best* free training opportunities compare with the paid opportunities that cover the same subject material? Can the freebies be an *actual* substitute or are they really just a better-than-nothing substitute? Also, is it possible to attain meaningful certifications from the freebies? Or, are you simply augmenting your knowledge by taking advantage of them?

Some of the best of the free IT training on the web *are* comparable to the paid training. However, the one big difference is what we've already discussed - and that is the opportunity to ask your questions and get them answered by a dedicated teacher or mentor helping you get through the training course. Having said that, however, you *can* ask your questions to many of the free technical help web sites, but there is no guarantee you'll get the most correct answer or even an answer that appropriately fits your questions. Smartforce CBT training courses (a large pay-for online training firm) used to be only self-study, but they have recognized in the last couple of years this need for live mentoring, so they have made mentors available to whom you can ask your questions and obtain answers from within
an hour to 24 hours.

The best of the freebies CAN be adequate if the student is self-motivated, has some background already in the subject, or knows where he can ask questions and get answers. In general, though, it is better to pay for training (if you or your employer can afford it) because usually the content is more thoroughly treated, you can ask questions, and you can get an actual certificate of completion, if that is important. So, I my answer is both, it can be an actual substitute, *and* it is a better-than-nothing substitute - it really depends on the context and individual situation: the student's background, his motivation, what free training he is studying, whom he is asking questions to, etc. I know people who have their MCSE certifications from just studying the free sites on the web.

Yes, people do pass the certification exams just by studying the free material, but it is difficult. You really need a mentor (or at least ask questions to experts in the free forums) and be very self-motivated and have at least some experience in the subject. Many people pay for training, either online or in a classroom, and then augment that by studying the free training on the web.

I hope this helps everyone.
