Each month Jeff Love will answer a current or important question that we have received about computer and IT training and career development.

March 2007 Question of the Month:

What are some good methods to slow down and even stop spam from coming into my email inbox?

Spam is a real and growing issue on the Internet today. It appears to be increasing and the perpetrators are getting better at it as time goes by. We need to become more sophisticated in our efforts to fight back and stop spam.

This recent Forbes article details 8 ways to deter and stop spam in its tracks:
  1. Go Incognito - Never post your e-mail address on a public site, even your personal Web site.
  2. Watch Out For The Little Boxes - E-mail users often receive spam because they've unknowingly requested the messages.
  3. Get An Alias - Getting an e-mail address is as easy as signing your name, with ubiquitous free programs like Yahoo.
  4. Sort And Screen - Many Internet service providers and e-mail services provide spam filtering.
  5. Chose Your Address Wisely - The more unusual your address, the less likely you'll be spammed.
  6. Ignore, Ignore, Ignore - Never, ever respond to spam.
  7. Guard Personal Information - Never confirm any personal information via e-mail.
  8. Keep Your Money In Your Wallet - Never buy anything from spammers.
Here is another good article offering 18 methods to use for keeping spam from getting into your inbox.

In this article, John Buckman, developer of the MailShield anti-spam/antirelay program discusses the impact of spam, and describes 5 strategies for stopping spammers in their tracks.

I hope this help you.
